Clear the Clutter & Make a Difference

If you’re anything like us, you’re working on clearing out the clutter from last year to make way for the new. We have many opportunities in our Northern Michigan community to make an impact by donating things we no longer need.

The What & Where to Give

Non-perishable foods

Cleaning out your pantry? The Manna Food Project (8791 McBride Park Court, Harbor Springs, Michigan 49740; 231.347.8852) collects the following:

  • Canned goods
  • Broths & boxed meals
  • Juice
  • Milk
  • Whole grains

The healthier options are preferred. It is noted that if you wouldn’t consume the item yourself, please do not donate it.

Manna offers several programs; the Food Bank, Food Pantry, Food Rescue, Food For Kids, and Produce for People.

Another great program in our area is known as Northmen Den Youth Services (231.622.8044). Youth pantries are located in Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Alanson, Pellston, Lakeview Academy, Concord Academy, and at the Char-Em Alternative School. They accept both monetary and food donations. Many area churches offer food panties. One notable pantry is Brother Dan’s Food Pantry (415 State Street, Petoskey, Michigan 49770; 231.347.7423). It’s been around since 2003, serves on average 148 families every two weeks, and accepts donations of time, food, or financial assistance.

Clothing

The Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan offers two resale shops (1878 US-31 North, Petoskey & 1002 Emmet Street, Petoskey, Michigan 49770) which accept donations of clothing, furniture, household items, books and other items.

Another great location to consider donating to is the Challenge Mountain Resale Store (1100 Boyne Avenue, Boyne City, Michigan 49712; 231.582.6966). This store generates more than $400,000 in sales each year to support the operations of Challenge Mountain; an organization which aids individuals with special needs with life-enhancing recreational opportunities and eases the financial burden of participating in such activities.

Household Items & Furniture

Habitat for Humanity ReStore (1840 M119, Petoskey, Michigan 49770; 231.347.8440) sells new and used furniture, appliances, home accessories, and building materials which helps to provide housing in communities such as ours!
