There’s nothing quite like winter in Northern Michigan but sometimes the kiddos can get a little stir crazy, we know! That’s why we put together a list of our top 5 winter fun activities both indoor and outdoor both free and (relatively) inexpensive!
1. The Highlands Enchanted Trail (Harbor Springs)
Enjoy a leisurely walk along the twinkling lights of The Highlands’ Enchanted Trail. This magical walk features interactive light displays, warm beverages, and an inviting bonfire complete with s’mores. Be sure to visit the 5 featured spots along the trail; The Tunnel of Trees, Let Me Hear You Sing (where the lights twinkle to your voices), Experience The Neon (pictured below), The Yurt (enjoy hot cocoa and grab your s’mores kit), The Wall of Lights (photo op!). Book your tickets online. Free for children ages 5 and under. Cost is $15 for youth 6 and up, $19 for adults.

2. Nubs Nob – Kids ski free! (Harbor Springs)
Nubs Nob is the only area ski resort where beginners of any age can ski for free for as long as they need to! Anyone with proper equipment can exit their car and immediately find their way to the purple lift (no lift ticket or pass required). The beginner area includes the newly installed conveyor, affectionately known as “The Space Worm”.
Also, while you’re at Nubs, you simply cannot leave without eating some curly fries.

3. Hike, Snowshoe, or Cross-Country Ski at the Headlands (Mackinaw City)
The Headlands are open 24/7/365 (including restrooms)! Explore the 5-mile trail system day or night! Remember though, The Headlands tend to run colder due to their proximity to the lakeshore so dress warm! Parking is available just inside the park and again at the end of the driveway at the Waterfront Event Center.

4. The Petoskey Field House (Petoskey)
Looking for some indoor fun? There’s a reason this made our list for the Top 5 Winter Fun Activities in Northern Michigan. When it’s snowy and blowy and you need somewhere to go, the Field House has you covered! The Petoskey Field House is a beloved resource by parents & kids! Drop-in ($19) and explore the indoor turf field, arcade, rock wall, and bounce houses! (Tip – bring a second pair of shoes for the indoor turf. )

5. The Creation Station (Cheboygan)
Cheboygan’s Creation Station is a DIY studio offering endless possibilities (paint, paper, glue, colored sand, crafts to make and decorate)! Walk in and choose a project and they will set you up! So much fun! But wait! There’s more! There’s also a playroom available to the public as long as there aren’t any private parties booked. And last, but not least, they have a toy shop- Right Brain Toys!
